Seseme Street celebrates 40 years: Here's 40 things you might not know (or remember) →

just a few:

1. CBS and NBC rejected Sesame Street before it debuted Nov. 10, 1969, on PBS.

6. The letters E, S and W, and the numbers 2 and 3 hosted the first episode.

27. Regarding Bert and Ernie, Sesame Workshop President and CEO Gary Knell said, “They are not gay, they are not straight, they are puppets. They don’t exist below the waist.” Sesame Workshop also released a statement in 1993 saying the friends are not gay.

31. Adults couldn’t see Snuffleapugas for 14 years, so they thought he was Big Bird’s imaginary friend. The storyline was changed in 1985 because the show’s creators worried it would discourage children from telling their parents about imaginary friends.

36. Baby Bird is Jewish.
